How We Worship
Sometimes Lutheran worship can seem confusing, especially when visiting for the first time. Many questions arise that can make church intimidating. Hopefully we can answer a few of these basic questions. We’d like your visit with us to be relaxed and enriching.
What will the service be like?
Lutheran worship retains many of the elements of historic Christian worship. There is a basic pattern that is followed each week. We Gather to give praise to God. We encounter God’s Word, hearing readings from the Bible and reflecting on a short message from the pastor. We share a Meal at the Lord’s table, celebrating Holy Communion each week. And then we are Sent out into the world to live out our faith in service to God and one another.
Music is an important part of Lutheran worship. Some have even called us the “singing church”. At New Hope we worship in both traditional and more progressive styles.
At our traditional services, worship is often with organ accompaniment. We have recently installed a new pipe organ which enhances this worship style. Our chancel choir sings a diverse repertoire of both sacred and more contemporary music.
Twice a month we offer a more progressive (some call it “contemporary”) service called New Hope “NOW”. The service is led by an ensemble of singers and a band that includes guitar, piano, drums, and various other instruments. The atmosphere is more casual and upbeat. Worship leaders dress casually. The songs we sing are likely to come from contemporary Christian music, with a few familiar hymns mixed in.
The two centerpieces of Lutheran worship are Word and Sacrament. God speaks to us through the Bible and makes Christ’s presence known in the bread and wine of Holy Communion. We invite all baptized Christians to join us for Holy Communion
What about children in worship?
We especially encourage young children to worship with their parents. Every Sunday there is a Children’s Message along with what we call “Kid’s Breakout”— a special learning time for children during the pastor’s sermon. A nursery is provided in the Community Center as well as a play room in the rear of the sanctuary if you feel your child needs a break. At New Hope, worship is an event for the whole family.
What do I do during the service?
The entire service is contained in the worship bulletin. All you need do is follow along. Many of the songs are found in the red worship books in the pews. Generally, Lutherans stand to sing and pray and sit to listen. During communion ushers will direct worshippers forward to the front steps and then back to their seats. There is also an offering time when ushers collect gifts from those sitting in the pews.
Will I have to stand up or say something?
We assure you, we will not embarrass you in this or any other way as a visitor. We want you to feel comfortable and at home with us. Church should be an enjoyable and uplifting experience. You may sign the “Welcome Pad” in the pew or the guest register in the entryway if you so desire.
Am I expected to give something during the offering?
The financial support of this congregation and the mission of the wider church is a responsibility assumed in church membership. This includes offering our time, talents, and treasure in proportion to our blessings and in response to God’s grace. As our guest, you should not feel obligated to contribute. However, you are welcome to participate as your heart leads you to give.
